Abstract

The purpose of research was to evaluate the yield potential of passion fruits in

South Suawesi and to evaluate nutrient content of passion fruit shell as ruminant

feeding. The study was conducted in two ways: Firstly, collecting secondary data from

related agency to gain information of total yield of passion fruits in South Sulawesi for

the period of 2001-2003. Secondly, collecting passion fruit shell samples from several

passion fruit juice factories around Makassar and evaluating the nutritional contents of

those samples at the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition, Animal Husbandry Faculty,

Hasanuddin University, Makassar. The results of experiment indicated that passion fruit

yields significantly decreased from 30,973 ton in 2001 to 9,829 ton in 2003. But the

nutrient content of the shell was quite satisfactory for ruminant feeding. In conclusion,

based on the its nutritional contents, passion fruit shell is acceptable as an alternative

feedstuff for ruminants, however its availability should be taken into account since

production of passion fruit, which will directly affect availability of the passion fruit

shell, decreased sharply during the period of 2001-2003.
